Kumaon Story
Located near the Himalayas, tea farmers from Champawat Village of Kumaon, India, first began cultivating tea under the British in the 1830s. But with accessibility challenges transporting tea from the mountains to the port, the British later abandoned the opportunity, and as such their tea lay forgotten and unknown to the world like buried treasure at the foot of the Himalayas. More than a century later, our friend Raj, working on a project in 2013, discovered the region’s tea treasure and was inspired to reawaken the cultivation of tea as an export to the U.S. The first attempted launch was actually unsuccessful, but this led our friend Raj to meet Desmond, the grandson of one of the tea farming families that came to Kumaon from Sri Lanka in the 1930s with dreams of reviving the land and these Kumaon black teas are fruits of their labor and partnership. This inspired a farmer-owned tea factory for specialty tea and was recently inaugurated in November of 2024. Kumaon’s rich legacy continues to thrive, uplifting its Himalayan communities and spreading its exceptional teas globally.
