Ilam is located in the eastern part of Nepal bordering Darjeeling, India. Due to similar soil and tea-making practices sometimes Nepali teas from Ilam are sold as knock-off Darjeeling teas.
In the 1990s, three villages joined together and began growing tea and named themselves Tinjure, meaning “Three hills”. They sold their fresh plucked tea leaves to other Tea Estates with processing facilities, until 2013 when the Tinjure Cooperative raised funds to have their own processing facility and make their own tea. Tinjure Cooperative is Nepal’s first cooperative with its own processing factory giving them 20 times more revenue than they did when selling their tea leaves to privately run factories. Today, this cooperative is comprised of 248 small-scale tea farmers and tea makers.
