Oriental Beauty Oolong

Place: Hsinchu County, Taiwan

Year Crop: Summer 2023

Tea Makers: Emei Tea House (Omee Cha)

After reading stories and savoring my share of the famous Oriental Beauty Oolong over the years, I made it to Hsinchu, Taiwan, the original source of this treasured and famous oolong.

Our hosts at the Emei Tea House (Omee Cha) graciously gave an educational garden tour. I was intrigued. It was a simple garden, full of diverse tea tree varieties and cultivars and surrounded by a dense forest.  Since 1917, this family of three fourth-generation brothers has carried on the legacy of their tea industry lineage, with Oriental Beauty teas being among their specialties.

Following the tour, they escorted us into their tea room to taste and experience this rare beauty first hand.  After cupping and analyzing the tea leaves, the color, the aroma and the taste of the liquor, I chose this beautiful tea to share with you.

Oriental Beauty Oolong tea is one of Taiwan's most renowned teas, some even enter multiple tea competitions. Every summer a leaf hopper visits the tea fields and nibbles on some of the tea leaves making them produce enzymes called monoterpene diol and hotrienol as a defense mechanism which help the tea develop its fruity sweet character.  With only a limited annual production, its prices are influenced by high demand and a small supply, making it a favored choice among tea enthusiasts.  It is also known as Champagne Oolong, Bai Hao Oolong  (White Tip Oolong), Dong Fang Mei Ren (Eastern Beauty), Wu Se Cha (Five Color Tea) and Pengfeng Cha (“Bragger’s Tea").
